After the end of Hereticus, most of Eisenhorn’s retinue continue on with Ravenor. We are thrown in the middle of a few of Ravenor’s cases. The central one in the book is following illegal (of course) heretical crystal traffickers. Despite starting mid-action, or perhaps also because of it, it’s easy to care about the characters and what they are investigating.
Even though it’s science fiction — moreover, Warhammer 40k — the story is, as is usual with the longer series, realistic. The main characters are professionals and know what they’re doing. But so are the enemies they face, and they have real problems and issues. Things very commonly go sideways and most of the time there’s no deus ex machina to save them.
Abnett is known for being good at developing the plot and action scenes. He is also quite good in general presenting less-viewed parts of the universe on occasion, and doesn’t run away from them. Someone looking for bolter porn will probably end up disappointed, but otherwise, I would expect most people to enjoy the beginning of the new trilogy.
