Eisenhorn Ravenor and Bequin

The Curiosity cover

The cover shown is for Lord of the Dark Millennium.

This short story has been published in several different sources, including Lord of the Dark Millennium, a compilation of Dan Abnett’s Warhammer 40k’s short stories. It’s also part of The Magos, the fourth book in the Eisenhorn series, but chronologically happens after the third book there (although no references are given to anything of the Eisenhorn stories) and before any of Ravenor’s.

I’m sure Black Library also had it for a while as an independent short-story ebook, but apparently they don’t sell it separately anymore.

The Curiosity follows Drusher, a Magos Biologis who has almost finished (1)He’s actually convinced he has finished and all this is a mistake. cataloguing animal life on a planet, but he returns to investigate some rumours of a predator.

The story is quite short, but it’s enough to present characters, develop the plot a bit and be fun and interesting.

I think anyone can read it, even non-Warhammer 40k fans, as there’s very little you need to know. At most there will be a couple of weird mentions (for example, people wearing a body-glove, but that’s pretty self-explanatory I think), but nothing that is a blocker to enjoy the story (2)Maybe the only thing is knowing that an Arbiter is basically a local law-enforcement person. .
