Similar to the previous two stories, this one was first published as part of an anthology. This one, though, is not part of the “Legends” series of anthologies, but of the Warriors anthology, edited by George R.R. Martin himself and Gardner Dozois.
The anthology included 2 pages of introduction, mostly about Martin’s career.
The anthology itself will be reviewed once I finish with it, once I catch up with all the series I intend to read. So probably in another life or two.
Oak and iron guard me well, or else I’m dead and doomed to hell, Dunk thought, before he remembered that this shield was made of pine.
Continuing from The Sworn Sword, Dunk and Egg, on their way to the North, end up going to a new tourney, the first since the one where they met. There, they find mysteries and conspiracies, and soon they will be in trouble again.
As with the previous tourney, the hedge knight and his squire find themselves in a pivotal moment in the history of Westeros. The story itself is highly recommended, but if one is reading through A Song of Ice and Fire, as most people reading it will be, it will be much more meaningful.
